The alternative is to do it on the cheap: take the PDF file, print it in an appropriate size, download the code, and start testing. I think some people have posted raster images (e.g. JPEG files) of the chart on the Web; the outline description here should produce a better test chart, as it isn't limited to pixel-level resolution. One way to test your own lenses is with the USAF 1951 lens testing chart. The best way to do this is to download a high resolution file of the chart from the link at the bottom of the page, and print the file out at about 3x3 inches in size on photo paper at your printers highest resolution (with many printers this is 1440 or 1880 ppl). You can download printable test charts by right-clicking on the thumbnails below. The bitmap chart, which is included in the samples folder of the Imatest installation, has pixel levels 47 and 255, has a contrast ratio of (255/47) 2.2 = 41 when printed at gamma = 2.2 (the normal setting). Our unique lens comparison widget lets you view test data for a wide selection of lenses, and compare them to each other at a range of apertures and focal lengths. First select the lens, then an appropriate test camera. You can use the control dials below the display to change focal length and aperture, and can switch between three views (for Sharpness/CA, Vignetting, and Distortion) by clicking on the tabs at the top.
To compare two lenses, click on the 'compare' link, which will open a new page with a second copy of the widget. Simply select the second lens and explore the data. In this mode you can use the cursor keys to change the focal length and aperture for both lenses together (up/down to 'zoom', left/right for aperture).
The page’s URL updates to reflect your current selections, so can be copied and pasted to provide a link to a page showing your choices.
