That's a common problem and is a problem with the game. I can't remember them off the top of my head, but there are solutions for it on the official Mass Effect forums. If you look through the technical self-help forums for the PC version on bioware's site there are workarounds or fixes for just about every single problem reported so far with ME. Just got Mass Effect for the PC. On my first playthrough, and I just got to the Citadel after the Eden Prime mission. I am walking in the Presidium toward the Citidel Tower, and when I look at the Mass Relay monument, the game crashes, and I get a window:
